Roles and Responsibilities

You as the Learner

• Arrange a pre-placement call or visit to connect with your Practice Educator and host setting.
• Identify your learning needs and co-create your specific learning goals with your Practice Educator, sharing it with your onsite mentor.
• Reflect regularly and share insights with both your Practice Educator and onsite mentor.
• Ask for support and clarification when needed, especially regarding task delegation and safety.
• Complete all placement activities within the agreed timeframe.
• Engage in all agreed supervision sessions and complete required documentation and evaluations.
• Ensure you have relevant insurance in place as required (this may include indemnity through your professional body, or more practical insurance for using your car etc)

What to expect from your On-Site mentor

They will:

• Prepare the placement environment and team ahead of your arrival.
• Facilitate learning opportunities in collaboration with yourself, your practice educator, and higher education institute 
• Offer daily mentorship and ensure a named contact is always accessible.
• Support your induction and oversee activities aligned with your Learning Agreement.
• Communicate regularly with your Practice Educator and assist with assessments.
• Delegate tasks that are safe, suitable, and within your abilities.
• Complete necessary documentation and provide feedback on the placement experience.

What to expect from your Long Arm Practice Educator

• That they will work with the HEI and placement site prior to your placement to assess and confirm placement feasibility.
• They will have reviewed all relevant HEI and host site documentation before the placement begins.
• They will engage with pre-placement planning, including arranging visits where possible.
• They will maintain regular contact with both you and onsite mentor, offering guidance and supporting reflective practice.
• Provide formal supervision on a regular basis to allow you to connect theory and practice
• Assess you against agreed learning outcomes and carry out mid-point and final evaluations.
• Ensure delegated tasks are appropriate to your competence.
• Evaluate the placement experience and provide feedback to the HEI.

What to expect from your Higher Educational Institutions (HEI)

• Reassurance that formal agreements are in place with PrBL providers, covering governance, responsibilities, and data protection.
• Support all parties to understand their roles.
• Remaining available throughout the placement to offer support and guidance.

Your Insurance and Liability Responsibilities on Long-Arm Supervision Placements

Placements using long-arm supervision can take place in a variety of settings. You need to make sure you understand what insurance arrangements apply during your placement.

• Professional cover: Clinical negligence and liability cover may come from multiple sources, including your Higher Education Institution (HEI), the host setting’s employer policies, and your own professional body. Student membership with your professional body, may include insurance cover—so check the details of your membership.
  
  Before placement: Confirm with your HEI and host setting what insurance arrangements are in place and whether they cover you for all planned activities.
  
  
• Personal responsibility: You are responsible for your belongings and, if using your car during placement, ensure your insurance includes 'business use' cover. This applies when driving for work beyond normal commuting, such as visiting clients, travelling between sites, or attending meetings.
  
  Reasonable precautions: Take steps to safeguard your belongings and clarify any uncertainties about cover before starting your placement.
