Introduction

Welcome to Supporting an under-performing student, the second of three learning resources about Reasonable adjustments and underperforming students. This follows Considering what is reasonable and facilitating disclosure, which explored how to identify when a student is underperforming and gather evidence to identify the detailed aspects of a student’s practice that require to improve for them to meet the practice placement criteria. It also aimed to provide an educator with clarity that they are working with a student who is underperforming based on evidence informed decisions.

This resource aims to enable practice educators to formulate a clear action plan by providing guidance for a fair and supportive process when you have identified areas of concern of student performance.

This series of learning resources has been developed with these principles in mind:

This resource is aimed at NMAHPs who have practice components within their learning programmes. The resource is informed by seminal and current health and social care literature and inclusion within this resource reflects the transferability and relevance of the literature to any NMAHP discipline.

The term ‘educator’ is used throughout the resource as a generic term that encompasses the various titles of those who support, supervise and assess pre- and post-registration students during practice based learning experiences (practice supervisor, practice educator, mentor, practice assessors).
