New Face, Shared Vision: Scotland Deanery's new Deputy Lead Dean Director

Alastair has a longstanding commitment to medical education, which began during his postgraduate training in South East Scotland. Throughout his career, he has held a range of educational leadership roles within NHS Scotland, including positions in NHS Lothian and, more recently, Associate Postgraduate Dean responsibilities for Quality and Medical Additional Cost of Teaching (ACT).

Nationally, Alastair has played a significant role in postgraduate medical education through the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG). He has previously chaired the RCOG Core Curriculum Committee, leading the development and implementation of the new core curriculum introduced in 2019. He subsequently served as Chair of the RCOG Specialty Education Advisory Committee.

Alastair was recently appointed Deputy Lead Dean Director. In this role, he provides strategic leadership for postgraduate medical education and training, supporting the development, quality assurance and continuous improvement of training programmes across Scotland. Within his portfolio, he has responsibility for Diagnostic Specialties and Medical Additional Cost of Teaching (ACT), working closely with educational leaders, training programme directors, healthcare organisations and national stakeholders to ensure high-quality learning environments and excellent training experiences.

He is committed to promoting innovation in medical education, supporting trainers, and ensuring that postgraduate training continues to meet the evolving needs of patients and learners.
