Leading the Way: Welcoming Our New Lead Dean Director
Dr Greg Jones
Dr Greg Jones brings a wealth of experience in medical education leadership to his new role as Lead Dean Director. Most recently, he served as Deputy Lead Dean Director and, prior to that, led the development of The Trainee Development and Wellbeing Service, helping to enhance support for Resident Doctors across Scotland.
Throughout his career, Greg has held a number of influential leadership positions, including Training Programme Director for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Foundation Programme Director, Chair of Academic Foundation Medicine for Scotland, Associate Postgraduate Dean for Quality, and Deputy Director of Medical Education.
Greg graduated in Medicine from the University of Dundee in 1991 and undertook general medical training in Coventry before completing specialist training in Edinburgh. He was awarded a Wellcome Clinical Research Fellowship at the University of Edinburgh and went on to spend 25 years as a Consultant Physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Gartnavel General Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.
In 2019, he was awarded a Doctorate by the University of Glasgow and is currently an Honorary Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Glasgow. His principal research interests include pharmacotherapy in type 2 diabetes, service delivery, and inpatient diabetes care. Over the course of his career, Greg has authored more than 100 book chapters, editorials, research papers and abstracts, making a significant contribution to both clinical practice and academic medicine.
As Lead Dean Director, Greg will provide strategic leadership for Postgraduate Medical Education Delivery across PSDS, with responsibility for a portfolio that includes Foundation and Early Years Training, Surgery, Resident Doctor Support, and Trainer Development. He will play a key role in ensuring the continued delivery of high-quality medical education and training across Scotland.
Outside of work, Greg is a keen football supporter, a lover of live indie music, and an enthusiastic—if self-confessedly slow—runner.
