What’s Expected

02

Here are the key expectations for Clinical Supervisors, including core responsibilities, time commitments, and the requirements needed to support students effectively throughout their Foundation Training Year.

What's expected from you

* Clinical Supervisors can also share these observation opportunities with other registered healthcare professionals within the practice or wider team - such as dispensing opticians or ophthalmologists - helping create a supportive, collaborative learning environment.

⏱️ Supervision time commitment

Time‑commitment expectations are similar to current expectations and align with the SPOKE project on Supervision (Sector Partnership for Optical Knowledge and Education).

Students will naturally require more direct support at the start of the year and gradually become more independent as they progress. Some elements of direct supervision can also be shared with collaborators.

✔️ Eligibility and experience

To act as a Clinical Supervisor for a FTY student, you must:

    • hold current GOC registration
    • maintain appropriate professional indemnity insurance
    • follow the GOC Code of Conduct
    • complete mandatory PSD Scotland supervisor training
    • commit to ongoing CPD and quality standards

These requirements ensure both supervisors and students feel confident, prepared, and set up for success.

🧑🏽‍💼 Supervision experience

As part of the application process, you’ll indicate your level of experience:

    • New to supervision: motivated but no prior supervision experience
    • Developing: some experience supporting learners
    • Experienced: recent supervision of a learner through to successful registration (e.g. Scheme for Registration, CLiP or FTY)

This information will help us tailor support, development and peer connections. Every level of experience is welcomed.
