The Role at a Glance
In our previous edition, we introduced the supervision model and explained the purpose of each role within the FTY. In this issue, we focus on the practice-based Clinical Supervisor role including what it involves and how you can get involved.
What will a Clinical Supervisor do?
As a Clinical Supervisor, you'll be a GOC-registered optometrist, with or without an IP qualification, supporting a student's clinical development in practice.
You'll guide them day to day, helping them provide safe patient care while developing their confidence and professional judgement.
What you’ll do day to day
You'll play a central role in supporting students throughout the FTY. Much of this will reflect what already happens in practice. What's new is the supervision model, alongside a structured way for students to collect and present their evidence.
"The emphasis is on guided development, supporting safe application of skills, judgement-building and confidence."
As part of the supervision responsibilities, you will:
-
- help your student maximise their learning opportunities
- offer timely, constructive feedback
- encourage reflective discussions
- carry out observations that contribute to the evidence reviewed during Educational Supervisor visits
