When considering what is reasonable and how to support students to disclose, reasonableness is defined as practical, effective measures that do not cause excessive cost or disruption to the practice setting or employer.

Reasonable adjustments are designed to minimise the disadvantages experienced by persons with a disability and are mandatory requirements based on the Equality Act (2010).

Effective reasonable adjustments require discussion with the learner and collaboration with relevant practice educators, practice setting staff and academic staff. Learners must be an active participant as the expert in their condition and may need support to recognise disability-related needs.

Reasonable adjustments can occur prior to or during learning in the practice setting. Anticipatory adjustment should be recognised.

Educators need to encouraged students to disclose in order to support their needs. Disclosure is the basis for the legal duty for making reasonable adjustments on placement. It is essential for making reasonable adjustments. Once a student discloses a disability, there is a legal duty to consider and where possible, make reasonable adjustments.
