Highlighting Opportunities
Highlighting opportunities for future FTY students!
Optometry in Scotland doesn’t look the same everywhere. And that’s its strength. We are committed to showcasing the full breadth of optometry practice across Scotland.
Students preparing for the FTY will be considering not just supervision and structure, but also the environments in which they may train and practise.
To support this, we’re excited to share three short films exploring optometry practice in different remote and rural communities.
The videos provide an insight into the diversity of community settings where optometry plays a vital role.
In this newsletter, we hear from three optometrists working in different remote, rural and island communities across Scotland, as they share what work and life are really like in these settings - from everyday practice to being part of a close‑knit community.
They help bring to life the wide range of settings students may experience through the FTY, exploring:
-
- the enjoyment and enrichment of working in these areas
- the day‑to‑day rhythm of practice and building meaningful relationships with patients
- working together in small healthcare teams and the broad professional experience this brings
- how the wider community shapes both practice life and patient care
