Delivery models
One-to-one: a student is allocated to and works closely with one educator. |
Peer-assisted learning (PAL): more than one student on the same placement at the same time |
Long-arm supervision: supervision provided by an AHP in a different location to the placement |
Split/share: two or more settings or sites host the placement |
Cross-sector: held outside of the NHS, for example paramedic placements or third sector |
Inter-professional: students from different professions on the same placement |
Project-based: students carry out a project, for example developing/evaluating a service/resource |
Leadership: an opportunity to develop leadership skills, delivered by an AHP leader |
Research: students carry out research within a service or team |
Consider which model of PrBL will work best for your placement. Clinicians are encouraged to try new approaches with support from Higher Education Institutions and/or local Practice Education Leads if required.
AHP PrBL opportunities meet the learner’s learning and development needs across the 4 Pillars of Practice, with opportunity to develop employability skills and experience local policies and values. Models can be used individually or mixed/combined.
Why combine placement models?
Blending different placement models—such as Long Arm Supervision (LAS), Peer Assisted Learning (PAL), 1:1, or project-based placements—can offer a richer, more flexible learning experience. Each model supports different aspects of professional development:
LAS builds independence, digital communication, and self-directed learning.
PAL enhances teamwork, peer feedback, and collaborative problem-solving.
1:1 placements offer close clinical supervision and direct skill development.
Project-based placements develop research, leadership, and service improvement skills.
How can models be combined?
Placements can be blended in creative and flexible ways, such as:
- Split placements: e.g. two days in a LAS setting, two days in a 1:1 placement; or different settings/focus such as 2 days clinical and 2 days in research/education setting.
- Phased models: starting with 1:1, then transitioning to LAS as confidence grows.
- Hybrid roles: combining clinical work with project or audit tasks.
- Shared supervision: working with multiple educators across different models.
- Opportunity for collaboration with mixed models – possible research/education and clinical split
By combining models, learners can:
- Experience a broader range of settings and supervision styles
- Develop skills across the Four Pillars of Practice including leadership, communication and collaboration skills
- Build confidence and adaptability in diverse environments
- Tailor learning to their individual goals and interests
Additional benefits of combining models:
- Practice educators may be able to support students despite different working patterns, offering flexible solutions for small teams/part-time educators and a possible increase in placement capacity.
- Can increase productivity and offer opportunities for service development and project work.
Things to consider
- Clear communication between learners, Practice Educators, and university staff is key.
- Learning objectives should be mapped across all models to ensure consistency.
- Regular reflection helps learners make connections between different experiences.
AHP PrBL can be achieved by any model or method of PrBL delivery adapted for any service or sector. Models may be mixed to form hybrid placements; they can be delivered face-to-face, online, or a blend of both.
