SDCEP guidance-related activities include:
- A surveillance review of the Prevention and Management of Dental Caries in Children guidance has been completed which has highlighted the need to update selected sections of the guidance only. An action plan has been developed to progress the work required to update these sections. A Guidance Development Group which will oversee the update is currently being set up.
- New guidance about the management of oral health care for oncology patients is under consideration. Focus groups with dental professionals have been carried out to explore the issues around providing care for patients with cancer, and to provide insight into what practitioners would find most helpful in guidance on this topic. Analysis of the research is in progress to inform the scope for guidance development.
- Management of Acute Dental Problems was published in 2013. While it is not anticipated that there are major changes required, a review of this guidance commenced in autumn 2023 to determine the need for, and extent of, any updating required.
- The Emergency Drugs and Equipment in Primary Dental Care (2015) publication has been updated by SDCEP. This has been done in collaboration with a Senior Resuscitation Officer and consultation with stakeholders. The revised document was published by Scottish Government on 8 February 2024
- Health Facilities Scotland is finalising the development of new guidance for dental services on decontamination (SHTM 01-05). This comprises three parts: A Management, B Equipment, C Process. Part C is based on and will supersede the SDCEP Decontamination Into Practice guidance. When the new guidance is published there will be further details on the SDCEP website.

- Becoming even better!
The Clinical Effectiveness Advisor Team (ACE) have been collaborating with colleagues in GDP to develop a Problem-Solving Toolkit. It aims to allow the whole team to work together to identify the root causes of issues they face in everyday practice, then develop and implement measures to resolve them.
We are launching this Toolkit at an all-day CPD event entitled "Becoming even better". It is being held on June 14th 2024, at Dundee Dental Education Centre. and is designed for the whole dental team so look for the Portal alert coming out soon.
