Trigger

Unable to source a local solution to student practice-based learning (placement) at risk of cancellation:

Examples include.

• Local solution (within the placement site/team) not available
• Local alternative placement opportunity does not meet student requirements e.g. academic, portfolio or timing.

Actions

Increased risk of cancellation of agreed PrBL (placement) experience

Practice educators/practice education providers:

• Continue to work through escalation process.
• Inform placement coordinator/line manager that no local solution found.
• Advise local forums and networks of the risk of a PrBL (placement) cancellation and seek their support to find a solution within the organisation.
• Inform HEI that no local solution found.

HEIs

• Remain in contact with placement provider regarding potential solutions within the organisation.

Consider solutions

Practice educators and practice education providers consider the following potential solutions:

• Can the placement be moved to another team, service within the organisation?
• Can the placement be shared with a partner organisation?
• Can the placement be a Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) experience supported by a practice educator within another team or service within the organisation?
• Could use of different models of placements or methods of delivery facilitate the placement to go ahead within the organisation e.g. a split or shared placement, remote or project-based placement?

HEI consider the following potential solutions and approaches.

Example Scenario

Placement offered in NHS. Changed to a different setting. 

"A placement was agreed to be provided by our team as part of an AHP NHS Service. Due to unexpected circumstances, the risk of a potential placement cancellation was identified. We asked another team in our service if the practice educators could facilitate the placement. We explored this together and realised it was not feasible within the timescales. We looked to our networks within the organisation. Support from our local forums and networks, allowed us to identify a team within the organisation who facilitated the placement using the Peer Assisted Learning, (PAL) model. A solution-focused network approach ensured a placement was delivered within the organisation".
