Optometry education is evolving, and Scotland is using this moment to shape what comes next.
In 2028, the Foundation Training Year (FTY) will launch as the nationally supported, practice-based final year of Scotland’s integrated MOptom (IP) programmes.
This change is not about replacing what worked before. It’s about aligning education with the realities of modern practice, and supporting students to graduate ready, confident and capable.
