A closer look...

01

We’ve introduced the FTY and how it works in practice. Now, we’re focusing on what underpins it: supervision in real clinical settings. This model is designed to give students the right support, at the right time, while reflecting how modern practice actually works.

The FTY introduces a nationally coordinated, team-based approach to supervision, built on shared responsibility and consistent educational oversight. Rather than relying on one supervisor, it brings together expertise from across practice and education to support student development.

How FTY supervision works

Supervision in the FTY will bring together two connected elements:

      • Educational oversight across the full placement year
      • Day-to-day clinical supervision within practice

Together, these will ensure students are supported to develop as safe, independent practitioners.

What makes this model different?

The FTY introduces a team-based approach with clearly defined roles, reflecting the collaborative nature of modern clinical practice.

The model strengthens:

      • shared responsibility for supporting student learning
      • structured progression across the placement year
      • national consistency in supervision standards
      • quality assurance across placements in Scotland

Clear role definition will help supervisors and practices understand how they contribute to student development.

Students will benefit from consistent support, regular feedback and clear educational oversight, all within a nationally supported framework.
