A closer look...

01

Following our introduction to the FTY, this next edition explores how it will work in practice, and what it means for students and the profession.

The FTY is structured around a number of connected elements that will shape how students learn, develop, and apply their skills across the year:

📍 Two 24-week clinical placements

Students complete two extended placements that will:

      • provide experience across different practice settings and patient groups
      • support progressive development across the year
      • expose students to different supervision and practice styles
      • help meet national priorities, including workforce distribution, by encouraging experience in different geographic areas

💊 Integrated independent prescribing training

Independent prescribing training will continue throughout the year, supported by:

      • simulation-based learning, and
      • teach & treat clinics, allowing students to consolidate prescribing knowledge and apply it safely in practice.

📅 Weekly protected development time

Students will have one protected development day each week to support:

      • reflection and consolidation of learning,
      • academic and prescribing activity, and
      • ongoing professional development

📝 Workplace-based assessment

Assessment will focus on:

      • clinical reasoning and decision making,
      • professional judgement, and
      • safe, consistent performance in real practice, rather than task or checklist completion.
