Support Worker Resources
Resources and Tools
We’ve brought together a range of career development resources designed specifically for Healthcare Science Support Workers, helping you strengthen your skills, build confidence, and explore future opportunities at your own pace.
Whether you’re focusing on enhancing your knowledge in your current role or preparing for progression, our materials reflect the variety of skills and capabilities needed across different levels of practice. With resources shaped by the Healthcare Science education, skills and competence framework, you can navigate your professional journey with greater clarity, direction, and support.
All these resources listed below are available on our www.hcstraining.nhs.scot website or on our Healthcare Science Turas Learn page.
Four Pillars of Practice Tool kit
This resource provides information and practical guidance as well as scenarios showcasing how the four pillars of practice can be used to support ongoing personal and career development.
You can access the resource by selecting the following: Four Pillar of Practice Toolkit.
Reflective Template Assessment tool
This reflective self-assessment tool is designed to help you evaluate the knowledge, skills, and behaviours (KSBs) outlined in the framework for your level of practice. It encourages you to reflect on your job role, identify areas for potential growth, and recognise opportunities for further development.
Find out about the Reflective Template Assessment tool on our website.
Development Needs Analysis Tool (DNAT)
The Development Needs Analysis Tool (DNAT) is designed to help you reflect on your current job role and identify areas where further training, education, and development could enhance or advance your skills. It utilises the knowledge, skills, and behaviours (KSBs) statements from the framework, organised under the pillars of practice, to assess your level of practice. A DNAT template is available for each Level 2-4 of the framework.
Find out about the Development Needs Analysis Tool (DNAT) on our website.
Turas Professional Portfolio
The Turas Professional Portfolio can be used to assist Support Workers to:
- record evidence of learning from experience gained in the workplace and through life experience
- support access to courses, gaining learning credits
- think about career progression
There are a variety of resources on Turas Learn about getting started to create your own personal Turas Professional Portfolio. For details about why use it, how to register and a recent webinar from HCSW talking about the benefits of using the portfolio for their career development; visit the Turas Professional Portfolio page on Turas Learn.
HCS Support Worker Webinar Series
We have a series of webinars designed specifically for support workers within Healthcare Science. These sessions offer practical insights, expert guidance, and valuable learning opportunities to help you grow in your role and navigate your career path with confidence.
Webinar recordings are available on our Past Webinars page on Turas Learn.
HCS Support Worker Stakeholder Group
Our newly‑formed Healthcare Science Support Worker Stakeholder Group has now held its first successful meeting, bringing together support workers and colleagues from across Healthcare Science to share experiences, highlight priorities, and begin shaping future development activity.
This group plays an important role in strengthening the voice of our support workforce by providing valuable insights that will help us improve career development opportunities, enhance resources, and support clearer progression pathways across Levels 2-4. Work is already underway to build visibility of the framework, develop supporting materials, and ensure our support workforce is fully engaged in shaping its future.
