Introduction

02

Scottish Government supports undergraduate medical education in Scotland via two main funding streams: direct support to universities is provided by the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), while Medical Additional Cost of Teaching (ACT) funding is allocated to Health Boards by NES and is a contribution towards the costs of clinical teaching within the NHS when medical students are in taught in hospital or General Practice (GP) placements.

This report provides an overview of the performance management and distribution of Medical ACT funding during 2021-22. The funding allocated for this financial year is based on clinical teaching activities delivered by Health Boards during a previous year, as illustrated by the table below. These activities are captured by an annual Measurement of Teaching (MoT) exercise, during which Boards submit their data to NES around 6 months prior to the upcoming allocation year.

Teaching Activity Delivered: 2019-20; Year of MoT Collection: 2020-21; Medical ACT Funds Allocated: 2021-22.
