Radiography
Radiography e-learning Suite
In partnership with NMAHP alongside dentists and radiographers from NHS Forth Valley and Lanarkshire, NES Dental has created a 4 module dental radiography e-learning suite. These modules were originally created to assist and guide radiologists working in a hospital environment, but the content will also be beneficial to dental clinicians and the wider DCP team.
The 4 modules are:
1. Legislation, guidance and x-ray generating equipment - completion time 1 hour
Learning Outcomes:
- Review existing knowledge on IRR17 and IR(ME)R 2017 regulations
- Understand the roles of the duty holders within the IR(ME)R 2017 regulations
- Explain the terms justification, optimisation and limitation within dental radiography
- Identify the range of equipment and resources used in dental intraoral imaging
- Describe the types of digital sensors used in periapical, bitewing and occlusal radiography techniques
- Apply a range of Quality Assurance methods to review and improve the quality of dental radiographic images
2. Dental anatomy and selection criteria in dental radiography- completion time 1 hour
Learning Outcomes:
- Identify the basic anatomy of the mouth.
- Describe anatomy seen on dental x-rays.
- Identify each tooth in two dental notation systems.
- Discuss justification for exposing a patient to ionising radiation.
- Identify selection criteria for dental radiography.
3. General dental radiography techniques - completion time 1 hour
Learning Outcomes:
- Identify the correct aiming device for each dental radiography technique
- Determine the correct sensor size required for a radiographic image
- Outline the technique required to prepare a patient who is referred for dental radiography
- Assess the quality of radiographic images taken for dental investigations
4. Advanced dental radiography techniques - completion time 1 hour
Learning Outcomes:
- Develop an understanding of the advanced radiography techniques used to obtain intra-oral images
- Recognise the limitations of the bisecting angle technique in dental imaging
- Apply knowledge of Parallax to dental radiography
- Differentiate between horizontal and vertical parallax imaging methods
- Consider alternative radiography techniques that could be used when a patient is unable to tolerate general intra-oral imaging methods
