Facilitating a Long Arm Supervision Placements

Pre-Placement

  • Establish Roles & Responsibilities: Clarify who is the long arm supervisor, on-site contact, and learner responsibilities.
  • Set Learning Outcomes: Align placement goals with the learner’s stage of training and curriculum requirements.
  • Plan Communication: Agree on supervision frequency, format (e.g., video calls, emails), and documentation tools (e.g., learning logs).
  • Risk Assessment & Safeguarding: Ensure appropriate support is in place for service user safety and learner wellbeing.
  • Induction and Placement Planning: Prepare orientation materials and introductions to the setting, team, and expectations.

 

During Placement

  • Regular Supervision: Hold structured check-ins to review progress, reflect on learning, and adjust goals as needed.
  • Ongoing Feedback: Provide timely, constructive feedback through agreed channels.
  • Support Reflective Practice: Encourage learners to document and discuss their experiences, challenges, and development.
  • Monitor Progress: Use learning logs, self-assessments, and feedback from on-site staff to track achievement of outcomes.
  • Facilitate Professional Growth: Encourage interprofessional collaboration, problem-solving, and independent decision-making.

 

Post-Placement

  • Final Review & Feedback: Conduct a formal review of learning outcomes, strengths, and areas for development.
  • Assessment & Documentation: Complete required evaluations / assessments and ensure all documentation is submitted.
  • Reflective Summary: Support the learner in producing a final reflection or summary of their placement experience.
  • Feedback to Setting: Share insights with the placement site to support future improvements and relationship building.
  • Celebrate Success: Acknowledge achievements and contributions made during the placement.
