What are the roles and responsibilities?

The organisational and strategic leads will:

  • Raise awareness of the HCPC Preceptorship principles, ensure access to appropriate training, allocated time and support to fulfil the roles and responsibilities into operational systems and processes.
  • Signpost managers to national guidance or any updates to preceptorship that may affect delivery of a preceptorship programme.
  • Advocate for the personal and professional benefits of preceptorship as regulatory obligations in the delivery of safe and effective care.
  • Promote preceptorship as a contribution to the organisations learning culture and health and wellbeing of staff and align preceptorship with other profession specific and workforce development programmes.

To ensure both preceptee and preceptor are supported in the workplace, all participants should comply with legislation regarding reasonable adjustments, equality, and diversity.

Confidentiality and escalation

As with all supervisory relationships it is understood that preceptorship meetings would be confidential. The exception to this would be in any instance where there is concern for the preceptor / preceptee relationship (for example untenable differences in working relationship), or either parties wellbeing or fitness to practice. At this point usual escalation procedures should take place via line management considering HCPC standards and Once for Scotland Policy.
