Line Manager Roles and Responsibilities

The line manager is responsible for the operational and managerial aspects of supervising the preceptorship processes in their service.

What are the roles and responsibilities?

The line manager will:

  • Identify new staff within the workplace who meet the definition of preceptee and ensure there is a clear avenue to access a preceptorship period that is tailored to the individual, appropriate to their professional needs and accommodates any reasonable adjustments.
  • Identify and support staff in the setting that would be an appropriate preceptor for a staff member.
  • Support these staff with adequate training, protected time, resources to upskill and fulfil a preceptor role.
  • Allow protected time for preceptee and preceptor meetings.
  • Ensure preceptees and preceptors are supported to maintain their own health and well-being.
  • Monitor and evaluate the preceptee and/or preceptor’s experiences of the preceptorship process supporting any concerns and provide feedback on quality and impact.

To ensure both preceptee and preceptor are supported in the workplace, all participants should comply with legislation regarding reasonable adjustments, equality, and diversity.

Confidentiality and escalation

As with all supervisory relationships it is understood that preceptorship meetings would be confidential. The exception to this would be in any instance where there is concern for the preceptor / preceptee relationship (for example untenable differences in working relationship), or either parties wellbeing or fitness to practice. At this point usual escalation procedures should take place via line management considering HCPC standards and Once for Scotland Policy.
