What can I expect on a PAL placement?

How do I prepare for a PAL placement?

Activities

  • On a PAL placement, you work with other students to learn and problem-solve, facilitated and supported by your Practice Educator(s).
  • Students may be split up for different days or tasks depending on the opportunities available, and you may not always be with your PE(s).
  • You could take part in a range of clinical and non-clinical activities as in any placement. In PAL, these activities may need to be adapted for more students or educators, e.g. using technology to watch remotely or taking turns.
  • On a PAL placement there can also be opportunities for other group activities, such as:
    • problem-solving/clinical reasoning sessions
    • providing feedback to one another as critical friends
    • project work
    • producing social media content
    • service audits
    • literature reviews

Individual Assessment and Support

In PAL placements, whilst working in a group, you will still have:

  • Individual learning objectives and goals
  • Individual supervision
  • Individual assessment
  • You will be assessed against university learning objectives and your own needs and goals, not in comparison to your peers.
  • Supervision and feedback will provide opportunities to reflect on progress, performance and areas for development. This can be a mix of 1:1 and peer supervision.
  • Peer supervision covers more general topics, and 1:1 supervision is more personal and confidential.
  • You will have time to meet with your Practice Educator 1:1 during your placement.
