Managing the risk of Paramedic PrBL (placement) cancellation

07

Paramedic practice-based learning takes place across diverse practice settings. Students go on placement in Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS). They also undertake cross-sector placements in Health, Social Care and 3rd Sector settings.  Placements in health, social care and 3rd sector organisations are interprofessional and are often facilitated by practice educators from AHP, nursing, midwifery, medical and other health and social care teams.

SAS Paramedic Practice Educators

If you are a paramedic practice educator employed in SAS, please follow this guidance for advice on managing the risk of placement cancellation. Your local SAS Practice Education Lead (PEL) will be able to support you with this

AHP Cross-Sector Practice Educators

If you are an AHP practice educator facilitating a paramedic student on their cross-sector placement, please follow this guidance for advice on managing the risk of placement cancellation.

Nursing, Midwifery, Medical and wider Health & Social Care Practice Educators

In relation to cross-sector placements in nursing, midwifery, medical and wider health and social care practice settings, it is recognised that elements of this guidance do not meet the needs of managing the risk of paramedic cross-sector placement cancellation.  Please follow the guidance below

Trigger, actions, solution-focused approaches and resolution

Trigger

  • An unexpected issue or situation that could impact a student placement

    Examples include

  • The practice setting is unable to support an upcoming placement
  • Student unable to undertake a placement due to a health and wellbeing issue

Actions

Placement provider

  • Informs HEI of risk to placement as soon as possible

HEI

  • Contacts placement provider explaining (as appropriate) the potential risk to placement as soon as possible

Consider solutions

HEI will support practice setting to consider possible solutions that will enable to placement to continue

Example local solutions

  • Change the date of the placement
  • Change the students shift patterns on placement
  • Consider a split placement or different model of placement e.g. long arm supervision (LAS) or Peer Assisted Learning (PAL)

Example of wider service or organisational solutions

    • Alternative placement sourced from within the wider service that enables placement to continue

Potential resolution

Example of resolution

  • HEI will refer to their local practice setting database to arrange an alternative placement
  • HEI contacts AHP Practice Education Lead (PEL) for support to identify an alternative placement setting
